Making Gold off the 3.0.8 Patch

by Trouble on December 24, 2009 under Patches

One of the easiest ways to make gold in World of Warcraft is to get a good read on upcoming patch changes and planning accordingly. There’s usually some change or another that will cause a change in the price of goods and if you pick up on this you can stock up and make a killing. Fortunately for you, I’ve put together a quick list of some probable moneymakers for the coming patch:

  • Ink of the Sea - A conversion is being added allowing you to trade 10 Ink of the Sea for 1 Snowfall Ink. Right now there is a glut of Ink of the Sea on the market due to people trying to make Snowfall Ink for Darkmoon Cards. If you can get stacks of ink for 40g or less I recommend buying all you can get.
  • Eternal Life - The limiting factor on Darkmoon Cards is Snowfall Ink currently. With the conversion being added there will be more available making the limiting factor Eternal Life. If you can get Lifes for 30g or less I recommend buying them.
  • Dream Shard - The materials used for some higher end enchants are being changed to use more shards. Blizzard said that they don’t like how cheap shards are now and want them to be in higher demand. If you can get shards for under 10g I recommend stocking up.

UPDATE:

Thanks to Nikitabanana for a heads up on the new recipe for Icy Prism. This would indicate. The recipe has a cooldown so its financial impact may be minimal, but I’d expect demand for Frozen Orbs to go up a little and supply of rare quality gems to also go up a little (and prices to go down).

Icy Prism Recipe

I’ll update this post with more if more changes are found.

  1. I've been following this blog since the day you made it public, and I've enjoyed reading your articles so far. I play in a world sub #40 3D-Sarth-killing guild, and I've found your insight to be spot on and fairly keen to address issues current raiders' encounter.

I'm glad you took a different direction with this article and discussed the wow economy. This is a topic of great interest to me as I am a regular power seller on my server. I'm looking forward to your future work and videos. Keep it up!
  2. Man, you'll be buying all the stuff on our server...qq @ that.
  3. All your auctions r belong to me Fy :D

  4. How much do you think these items will go up to?
  5. Not sure if this change is still in, but i saw on an early patch note that blue uncut gems were purchasable for 10 emblems of heroism, which combined with the icy prism should see prices drop once it hits.
  6. So with the most recent patch notes I saw some more changes:
Frozen Orbs required for Epic LW leg armor
    Tailoring requiring more Iceweb Spidersilk

I think that will push up the price of Orbs and the armor a bit. I was thinking of stocking up on some of each or the armors and orbs, along with Iceweb silk.
  7. Yea so I got 140 dream shards, 140 eternal life and 260 ink of the sea. How much might this be worth after patch? I've never paid over 11g for a dream shard, never over 20g for an eternal life and never over 25g for a stack of ink of the sea. Total money spent (at most, which it isn't): 11*140 + 20*140 + 25*13 = 1540 + 2800 + 325 = 4665. I got some a bit cheaper, so say I spent about 4000g. Selling prices after patch? wild guess here, dream shard 35g, eternal life 40g, 1 stack of ink of the sea 50g.
    35*140 + 40*140 + 25*50 = 5320 + 5600 + 650 = 11570. I'm making a 7k profit on this patch? Holy moly. Are my price esimates too high/too low?
  8. [...] like the icy art of making gold and other tips i come across, like this post on the tardfactor on how to make money from patch 3.0.8. Especially the new possibility to exchange Ink of the Sea for other inks are interesting. Early [...]
  9. The patch has arrived (3 days ago) and this is how the prices are on my server:

    Ink of the Sea: 6g
    Eternal Life: 17g
    Dream Shard: 17g
    Frozen Orb: 40g

These were all the lowest buyout prices friday afternoon.

I invested a few hundred golds in Eternal Lifes and Dream Shards. To begin with I bought Lifes for 20g/each, but at the end (before the patch) they were as low as 8g/each. In the end I think I'll end up even.
Dream Shards however were very steady at 8-10g/each before the patch, so I think I'll be doubling my investment on them.

All in all not profitable enough for me to do again at next patch.
  10. I recommend holding onto the Eternal Life. The Darkmoon Card rush begins when the Faire is coming to town, which is in a couple weeks. Ink of the Seas I bought for 25g a stack and they're going for 100-150g a stack now. Frozen Orb I didn't invest in since I wasn't confident in the price going up a lot.

I am pretty confident we'll see a further jump in Ink of the Sea and Eternal life prices as existing inventory is burned down over the next weeks, especially upon the next coming of the Faire. I'm holding onto 10 stacks of Snowfall Ink and like 30-40 stacks of Eternal Life at least until then.
  11. Seems the Eternal Life Gamble bit me in the ass. They are 10g on my server during Darkmoon Faire. I'm hoping next Faire they are worth more, but as soon as Ulduar info is released and there are trinkets better than Darkmoon Card: Greatness the value of Darkmoon Cards and their mats will plummet.
